Reception in honour of 2013 WA Fulbright Scholars

Monday, 10 June 2013

Julie recently addressed a reception in honour of the 2013 Fulbright Scholars at UWA and met WA’s outstanding recipients Roxanne Moore, Dr Tiago Tomaz and Rebecca Smith.

The Fulbright Program is the largest and one of the most prestigious educational scholarship programs in the world. Since its establishment in Australia in 1949 more than 4700 scholarships have been awarded to Australians and Americans.

Tiago is going to the University of Illinois for a year to further his research in crop improvement through genomics, Roxanne will undertake a Master of Laws, specialising in public international law and human rights law; and Rebecca is heading to the Manhattan School of Music to undertake a two year Master of Music Degree.

Julie said a highlight of the reception was Rebecca’s performance of her own musical composition with Dr Jonathan Paget (pictured with Julie and Fulbright Commission Board Chair Professor Steven Schwartz).

Centenary of ANZAC Grants Now Open!

Julie has officially opened applications for funding from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program.

“The Centenary of ANZAC will be the most significant national period of commemoration in our nation’s history”, she said.

“Locally, our community will work together to ensure that we pay appropriate tribute to the thousands of locals who answered the call to serve their nation and the hundreds who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our collective values and beliefs.”

“These ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program grants will give the community the opportunity to honour service and sacrifice.  There are many different ways this can be done – from traditional dawn services and marches of veterans, through to re-enactments of recruiting marches, school-based education programmes, refurbishing of memorials and honour boards and establishment of new places of commemoration and reflection.”
